Scribefire for Blogging

First of all get Mozilla's Firefox browser... for a lot of reasons.

Then, if you blog at all, check out the 'ScribeFire' plugin. It makes for quick publishing from within the browser possible. I'm just checking it out... and I haven't figured out what I don't like about it yet, but so far, so good. Allows for multiple blog logins as well.

Image linking and uploading is functional, too.

Tweetvolume

Tweetvolume allows you to see the popularity of certain keywords in the land of Twitter.
At first glance I thought Twitter was ridiculous... A waste of time and energy, but I'm starting to see it's appeal.
It's a form of "micro blogging" that allows a users to text the answer to the "what are you doing?" question from anytime via there computer or cell phone or web device ... Users can choose to follow whoever they choose.
Links are shared, blogs, products, news articles, .... generally truncated via a plugin like tinyURL... 140 characters is the max allowed for each "Tweet", as they are called.
I'm still figuring out some of the apps and process of replying to specific individuals in the way that makes this a form of "chat room to go". I'm really not into "chat", but I like the random group discussion that ends up being a source of information that I may not get elswhere ....
What you get depends upon who (or what) you follow.

University on wheels

How much could you increase your knowledge and expertise if you had an extra 38 hours per year to devote to learning?

How about 60 hours if you live in the SF Bay Area?.. 54 in San Jose?... 72 in LA area? ...

You do have this available if you are not already using your commute time for audio learning. (These measurements from a recent study...) So much of this content is available for free these days.

It used to be a sixty dollar expense for a six tape series of some high level audio learning experience, but welcome to the days where an enormous amount of brainy discussion is available for the picking with a small amount of technology.

I'm still amazed at the amount of folks who are astonished to find out that podcast content is free, and that they don't need an iPod to partake in the festivities.

38 hours per year seems pretty low.... I know plenty of people who commute that much in a little more than a month!

What a wonderful learning opportunity!

Zoom in - Zoom out!

Talented managers are able to move quickly between the micro and the macro perspective.

Seeing the "big picture" and the "long view" is, of course, an important quality for any leader or manager. They must be the "watchman on the wall" or at least know to listen to the reports of their well positioned watchmen.

Minutia has many forms, some being a complete waste of time and energy, and others providing advantageous information......valuable detail. The potential for information overload is real and creates a challenge for anyone in business as they adjust their strategy.

Beware the data deluge! Zoom out.

Each of us may have an inclination to be either more micro or macro minded about what we give our attention and our time. It may be our great strength when rightly applied, but our shortcoming as well. We need to be aware of which we are and how much time and energy we allocate.

It's not always as obvious as complete success or complete failure in something, that's not what I'm suggesting. But, if your surprised by the lack of results in a particular area the answer may be wrapped here.

Regular self questioning and reflecting helps adjust our actions as needed.

  • "Is what I'm doing now the best use of my time?".
  • "Which goal is this activity helping me achieve?".
  • "Where does that goal rank in terms of my effectiveness?"

Some people have this internal "question bell" ring every 15 minutes or so, in order to keep themselves in check. (If your easily distracted, like me). This is less necessary once good planning routines for focus are in place.

Any new data that arrives on the scene....... Those new and supposedly "urgent" items should always be reflected off of the current priority list in order to set them in their rightful place.

Oh, make sure the list is written down......... And rewritten regularly. That's the rules.

Could Email Die?

Interesting consideration.... quote from John McKinley (formerly AOL CTO and, later, President of Digital Services.)

"We are in the midst of an important moment of truth - email as we know it is under attack, and the major firms are not moving fast enough to prevent it from becoming more of a niche form of communications in the next 5 years. The email experience of today is being threatened on multiple fronts by a variety of new forms of communication:

  • Twitter/short-form blogging
  • Asynchronous messaging in social networks (e.g., the Facebook Wall)
  • IM experiences now supporting queuing of messages to offline buddies
  • Away message/Status message utilization in instant messaging
  • SMS adoption (late to come to the US, but now pervasive)......................."
  • ..........see full list at Lightspeed's blog ....where I clipped this from.....

    UM is not a word

My 5 year old girl explains, politely, to adults, "Excuse me. Um is not a word.".

We had explained this to Eliana after she came back from my mother's house "Um-ing" like crazy! My mother is wonderful, but has a chronic "Um" infection. I really didn't want my daughter to catch it.

Ever have to listen to a long winded, incessant "ummer's" message on your answering machine?!! Egads!

What really blows my mind are the professional speakers who get away with this! Radio personalities, audio and video podcasters....

My favorite is when the UM is more pronounced than the normal speech volume..... Somebody, provide some feedback for these folks....!

I'm not saying I'm "Holier than Thou"...... my speech fillers have only morphed into "Uhhs" and "Ehhs" ..... Much more sophisticated!

Suzanne and I have recently progressed into using the intensifier, "actually" in every other sentence..... Whew, that's a tough one to kick!

Intensifier?? Is that what that is? .... Shucks, now I have to go look it up. Time to catch up on some episodes of Grammar Girl....

What's your speech habit that needs some "examination" ..... C'mon, now... You've gotta have something.

I had to break myself of "aints" again, a while back!!! I'm not sure how those slipped in... Well, .... Yes, I do..... It was from being around some folks that use it, even in jest... Not that I'm "better than all that", but, well... I'm just not wanting any of my parts of speech to be a distraction.

Sometimes I catch myself saying a whole lot of nothin'!

I've had to turn off the radio, at times, because all I can hear is the exaggerated "Ums" and I can no longer focus on the message! ....makes me crazy! I think I may have a problem.

Blecchh, I just started to look at my writing! Issues abound. One thing at a time, please.
